Meet up-and-comer CrossFit star, 14-year-old Rees Cooksy!
Cooksy easily won the Teen Gauntlet online qualifier earlier this fall, placing 1st on four events, second on one and third on another. Check out full results HERE.
Cooksy might only be 14, but he already has five years of CrossFit experience under his belt at CrossFit Forney in Texas. Originally, he started CrossFit so he would be better at the sports he was interested in pursuing, and just to get strong, he said. Those reasons still stand today, but Cooksy, who also plays football and does track and field, now has both CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting competition goals, too. His number one goal for the upcoming season is to qualify to the CrossFit Games in 2018 as a teen.
“I don’t want to make it. I want to stand on the podium,” he said, adding that his long term goal is to make it to the Games as an adult.
Cooksy was too young to compete in the worldwide Open in 2017, but he did all the workouts anyway and would have placed 15th in the world had he been eligible to submit scores.
It’s safe to say, he is stronger than your average 14-year-old: Cooksy”s max back squat is 330 lb. and his best clean and jerk is 251 lb. Not to mention, he boasts a 202-lb. snatch.
He’s the first to admit that CrossFit has played a huge role in shaping his life already.
“I always make a joke and say, ‘CrossFit is life.’ I spend most of my time outside of school at the box,” he said. CrossFit has also helped him in other areas of life, he added.
“As far as helping me in school, I think it helps me focus on the task at hand, just like I do in WODs. Emotionally, it has helped make me more mature and learn that there are lots of opportunities. I used to get real emotional when I would miss lifts and now I”ve learned it”s not the end of the world and the barbell will still be there for another attempt.”
He added: “Most of the relationships I have with people from the gym are more like family.”
